"Kobelt: Always Leading with Quality and Value"
Jacob (Jack) Kobelt was born in Canada in 1930 and as a young child, returned with his parents to Switzerland.
As a teenager, he received training in Switzerland as a machinist.
Then, the lack of opportunities in Western Europe during World War II forced Jack to make a life-altering decision.
He went to the Canadian Embassy in Switzerland with his Canadian birth certificate in hand and asked to be allowed re-entry into Canada.
Jack came to Vancouver with the equivalent of $5 in his pocket.
Jack soon found work as a heavy-duty mechanic for the construction industry.
Later on he started working as a Marine Engine Mechanic for a local engine supplier.
While on-board one of the ships, the Chief Engineer said aloud: "I wish I could get some controls that would make this ship move better."
Jack replied thoughtfully: "I can make them for you."
Back at his home on Dumfries Street in East Vancouver, using a lathe in the basement, Jack skillfully crafted the controls for the ship - exactly what the Chief Engineer had wished so long that he had.
After seeing how pleased the Chief Engineer was, Jack decided to start a business that would cater to the needs of a growing marine industry on the west coast.
Hence, Kobelt Manufacturing Company Limited was founded in 1962 in the basement of the Kobelt residence.
Jack first set up shop on Main Street in a building that used to stand at the foot of the Georgia Street viaduct.
Kobelt Manufacturing Co. Ltd. next moved to another building in East Vancouver, and quickly outgrowing this location, moved to Richmond.
In 1996, Kobelt found its perfect location in Surrey, B.C.: a 60,000 square foot facility, to house its manufacturing divisions and head office with over 50 employees.
The move to Surrey was necessary given the growing local and international demand for Kobelt's product lines.
Today, Kobelt Manufacturing provides the marine industry internationally with propulsion controls, steering gear, propeller shaft brakes and deck machinery controls.
Kobelt's product range includes the latest technology in electronic, mechanical and pneumatic controls, "fly by wire" hydraulic steering gear, and disk brake systems for limitless applications.
Kobelt Manufacturing also prides itself with innovation, which has allowed the company to expand its capabilities not only in the marine industry, but also in the forestry, oil exploration, paper, aerospace and heavy construction industries.
For example, the uniquely designed Kobelt disk brake is installed in the crane that lifts NASA's Space Shuttle and secures it onto a 747 plane for transport.
From early on, Kobelt Manufacturing Co. Ltd. developed a superior reputation in the marine industry for manufacturing high quality (true to Jack's roots in Swiss training), well-priced products.
Satisfied customers have been the strongest contributors to the company's growth over the past 41 years.
This has allowed Kobelt to enjoy a strong distributor base globally and is proof of true value for customers all over the world.
